Tackling Poverty

Tumaini for Refugee Women has effectively tackled poverty in Nakivale Refugee Settlement through a multifaceted approach. By providing vocational training, business development support, and microfinance assistance, Tumaini empowers refugees to generate income and achieve financial independence. Additionally, initiatives promoting education access and healthcare services contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering sustainable livelihoods within the refugee community.

Tumaini has made a big impact in Nakivale Refugee Settlement by addressing the multifaceted needs of refugees. Through comprehensive programs spanning education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and psychosocial support, Tumaini has significantly improved the well-being and prospects of refugee women, girls, and youth. By fostering resilience, empowerment, and community integration, Tumaini’s initiatives have brought about tangible positive changes in the lives of those affected by displacement in Nakivale.

Uniting The Society

Tumaini has played a pivotal role in uniting the society within Nakivale Refugee Settlement through various community-building initiatives. By organizing inter-community dialogues, cultural exchange events, and collaborative projects, Tumaini fosters mutual understanding and cooperation among refugees from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, advocacy campaigns promoting tolerance and inclusion contribute to creating a cohesive and harmonious environment within the settlement, strengthening social bonds and solidarity among its residents.

History About Us (2018 )

  • We began in 2018, as an advocate for women and children facing legal and human rights
    violations.
  • In 2019, we committed to full inclusion in our client base, and began to serve marginalized
    groups (the disabled, adolescent girls, etc.).
  • In 2020, with the onset of COVID-19, we established a counseling program to address
    growing issues of early and forced marriages, early pregnancies and sexual exploitation.
  • In 2021, we developed The Tumaini Lab, in partnership with HIAS and Coursera, to provide
    quality education in a safe, dignified space.
  • In 2023 and 2024, Tumaini for Refugee Women partnered with CARE International under APEAL 4 to support, empower and educate Women and Girls in Nakivale Refugee Camp in zones like Juru, Rubondo and Kahirimbi.

Our Impact in 2023 and 2024

  •  Education Access:
    – Tumaini, in partnership with CARE International, facilitated increased access to education for refugee women, girls, and youth in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, particularly in areas like Rubondo, Ruhoko, and Juru.
    – Through APEAL 4 initiatives, scholarships, and educational programs, Tumaini supported refugees in obtaining formal education, vocational training, and skill-building opportunities.

 

  • Economic Empowerment:
    – Tumaini’s interventions under APEAL 4 fostered economic empowerment among refugee women, girls, and youth, enabling them to participate in income-generating activities and entrepreneurship ventures.
    – Initiatives such as vocational training, business development support, and microfinance assistance empowered refugees to create sustainable livelihoods and improve their financial independence.

 

  • Health and Well-being:
    – Tumaini and CARE International prioritized the health and well-being of refugees in Nakivale Settlement through healthcare services, reproductive health education, and access to hygiene and sanitation facilities.
    – APEAL 4 initiatives addressed health disparities and provided essential resources to enhance the overall health outcomes of refugee women, girls, and youth in Rubondo, Ruhoko, and Juru.

 

  • Psychosocial Support:
    – The partnership between Tumaini and CARE International facilitated psychosocial support programs and mental health services for refugees, particularly women, girls, and youth who have experienced trauma and displacement.
    – APEAL 4 activities included counseling sessions, community support groups, and recreational activities aimed at promoting resilience and mental well-being among refugees in the targeted areas.

 

  • Gender Equality and Empowerment:
    – Tumaini and CARE International implemented initiatives to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment within Nakivale Refugee Settlement, fostering leadership roles and decision-making opportunities for women, girls, and youth.
    – Through APEAL 4, advocacy campaigns, awareness workshops, and capacity-building programs were conducted to address gender-based violence, discrimination, and promote gender-sensitive policies and practices.

 

  • Community Integration and Social Cohesion:
    – Tumaini’s efforts, in collaboration with CARE International, contributed to enhancing community integration and social cohesion among refugees in Rubondo, Ruhoko, and Juru.
    – APEAL 4 initiatives facilitated inter-community dialogues, cultural exchange events, and collaborative projects aimed at fostering mutual understanding, cooperation, and harmony within Nakivale Settlement.

Our Impact in 2021 and 2022

  • 423 refugee women and girls have been empowered with skill and many are now doing small jobs to earn money, doing tailoring, craft making, decoration, making reusable sanitary pads and bags.
  • 187 youth (101 male, 86 female) have done project management, entrepreneurship and leadership training with support from IDEA4Africa – some now running small businesses, creating community-based organizations or working on projects in the community. Others have become teachers, and are finding other safe, dignified work.
  • 60 people are learning English, computer science and a variety of other skills in our Tumaini Lab.

Tumaini is a known, respected resource,

in Nakivale Refugee Settlement. Over 600 people have participated in our programs and their learning is having an impact.

There is exceptional demand,

for our services. With adequate funding, we have the opportunity to transform life in Nakivale, serving thousands of people whose lives could be transformed by our services, by learning, and through the relationships they build with other clients.

We must act now to build on our momentum,

to grow our services and staffing so that we meet the demands of our community. Our partners have a unique opportunity to use resources in a highly impacting way.
